Maccabees 2012

12/14/2012

Chanukah is our yearly celebration of the fight against tyranny.  It recounts some of the earliest chapters in the eternal struggle between good and evil.  And our holiday inspires us as we find ourselves fighting some of the same battles today.  Our brothers and sisters in Israel are modern day Maccabees struggling to protect the only democracy in the Middle East.

Those of us in this country do our best to stand with Israel.  Staying informed on being able to explain the importance of our homeland to those around us is one of the most important things we can do.  But to better understand the situation in the Holyland, to deepen the connection we have to this remarkable place you must visit yourself.

This coming year, on June 3rd, we will be traveling to Israel for TBA’s 5th community trip since 2006!  This is incredible even by large congregational standards, and it is a testament to the centrality of Ahavat Yisrael, the love of Israel that exists in our community.  This will be our first summer trip, and allow us to experience Israel in a different season.

We will visit ancient and modern sites including: The Old City, Citadel Museum at David’s Tower, Cardo, Israel Museum, Rabbinic Tunnels, Yad Vashem, Mount Herzl Military Cemetery, Judean Desert, Qumran Caves, Ein Gedi Oasis, Dead Sea, Masada, Caesarea, Crusader city of Acre, Port city of Haifa, Bahai Shrine, Rosh Hanikra, Safed, Tel Dan, Banias, Jordan River, Golan Heights, Sea of Galilee, Tomb of Maimonides, Beit Shean, Beit Alpha, Tzippori, Tel Aviv, Independence Hall, Neve Zedek, Old Jaffa.

Some of those sites, we have visited on every trip, some we have never visited together.  Many of those who traveled on previous trips will be returning again, which only proves that you owe it to yourself to experience what would make us yearn to return.

Two thousand years of waiting to be restored to our homeland—two thousand years of longing, wandering, and suffering— came to an end in 1948.  And sixty four years later we still celebrate the miracle.  It is a miracle even the Maccabees might have thought impossible.

Each year we end Yom Kippur Neilah services and our Pesach seders by saying, L’shanah ha-ba’ah B’Yeruslayim, Next Year in Jerusalem. This year, live out the dream.
